Kumezo was born on the 15th of January, 1859 in Osaka, Japan.
Began his studies (1872) first at Kaiseiko, then at Tokyo Foreign Language School to graduate from Tokyo University in literature and science
Kumezo went to Germany, Austria and Switzerland (1877) for historical research, making a particular study of the early contact between Holland and Japan. Returned home (1891). He was professor of history at Tokyo University, and a member of Imperial Academy. Works: "A History of European Diplomacy" (3 vols.) and "Methods of Studying History."
