Kuniteru Nitta was born in Awa Province (Tokushima prefecture), he was a descendant of Yoshisuke Nitta, noted warrior loyal to the South Dynasty. His early name was Kanzaburo Takezawa.

Kuniteru Nitta founded the Shusei Sect (1869) and assumed the name of Kuniteru Nitta. His sect was participated in by believers of the Ontake-ko and Fuji-ko, Shinto believers who make pilgrimages to Mt. Ontake and Mount Fuji for spiritual training. He traveled widely and made recommendations to the Court on national affairs.
