Kuniyoshi Tsuchiya is remembered as one of Japan's well-known philanthropists. At his own cost he financed the building of roads, construction of canals and bridges, bringing about improvements in agriculture, alleviating the condition of the poor and the spread of education. Is also remembered as a brilliant poet, an expert calligraphist and a skillful painter.
Career
After the Meiji Restoration he was appointed head of 88 villages. To help the agricultural populace he published Yasusada Miyazaki's "Complete Agriculture" (11 vols.) and distributed copies free to the general populace (1866).
