Kurt Rudolph was born on April 3, 1929, in Dresden, Germany. He is a son of Georg Rudolph, a clerk, and Gertrud (Schulz) Rudolph, also a clerk.
During the period from 1948 till 1950, Kurt attended the University of Greifswald. Later, he continued his education at Leipzig University, where he got a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Theology in 1956. The following year, in 1957, Rudolph obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Philosophy and in 1961, Kurt received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Religious Studies from the same university.
Also, Rudolph attained several honorary degrees, including an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland (1983), an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree from Leipzig University (1995) and an honorary Doctor of Theology degree from Aarhus University, Denmark (1998).
In 1963, Kurt began working as a visiting professor at Leipzig University. Later, in 1980, he taught at the Centre of Religious Studies, University of Toronto. Between 1983-1984, Rudolph was an educator at the University of Chicago Divinity School. He retired from his teaching positions in 1994.
During his career as a professor of Religious Studies at different educational establishments, Kurt gained a reputation as an expert on Gnosticism and Manichaeism. Moreover, he examined Islam and occupied himself with methodological questions in Religious Studies. His main aim was to create a Religion Studies discipline, that would be independent of theology.
Currently, Kurt lives in Marburg, Germany.

1983Kurt noted, that Religious Studies must be rational science and therefore has a duty to subject itself to a methodological atheism.
Kurt is a member of the International Association for the History of Religions, Institute for Antiquity and Christianity, Claremont, and Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Leipzig.
Kurt married Christel Killus, a theologian, on September 15, 1951. Their marriage produced two children — Ulrike and Ekkehard.
