Kuz'ma Petrov-Vodkin, USSR Artist.


Petrov-Vodkin, Kuz'ma was born on November 5, 1878 in Khvalynsk, Saratov Oblast’.


Studied at the Samara Art Classes, 1893-1895, under F.Burov, then at the Petersburg Shtiglits Central School of Graphic Art, 1896-1898, and at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, 1898-1903, under L.Pasternak, I.Levitan and V.Serov.


Genre, portrait and still-life painter, graphic artist, stage designer. At the Azbe school, Munich, 1904. In Paris at a private art academy, 1905-1908.

Visited Italy, 1905, and North Africa, 1907. Member of the Mir Iskusstva from 1911, and the Chetyre Iskusstva from 1924. At one time, influenced by symbolism and modernism, also by V. Borisov-Musatov.

Taught in Leningrad, 1918-1933. Exhibitions: theZolotoe Runo, 1909-1910, the Mir Iskusstva, 1910-1924, Zhar-Tsvet Society 1924, the Chetyre Iskusstva, 1925-1929. Personal exhibitions: St. Petersburg, 1909, Petrograd, 1920, Leningrad, 1936-1937.
