MECHIYEV, Kyazim was born in 1859 in village Shiki, now Kabardo-Balkar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Son of a cattle-farmer.

Attended theological school. Studied Pharsee, Arabic, Turkish and the Oriental poets.
1890 began writing; made two trips to Middle East. 1909-1910 visited Istanbul, Baghdad, Damascus and Mecca. During prc-Revol period wrote poems about unrequited love, soc inequality, folk wisdom and the people’s struggle for justice and freedom.
During Soviet period eulogized Soviet rule, the Civil War heroes and Lenin and Stalin. 1943 in the course of mass reprisals against the Balkar people for “collaborating with the Germans”, exiled to Kazakhstan.
