Kydu Hoashi was born in Bungo Province (Oita Prefecture).
Studied Chinese painting of the South School under Chiku-den Tanomura and Confucian literature under Banri Hoashi and Tanso Hirose. Later he went to Kyoto and studied under two noted Confucian scholars, Sanyo Rai and Shunkin Uragami.
He presented two large paintings of his to the Court at Im¬perial request. Travelled widely in Japan. Although his fame rose, he could not attain the height achieved by his master, Chikuden, but handed down Chikuden’s style to his disciples.
