He was traded to Hawthorn after the 2010 season, and then to Adelaide at the end of 2014. Melbourne (2009–2010)
Cheney debuted in the first round of the 2009 season, his second in the American Federation of Labor-Congress. He played 12 matches in 2009 but only two in 2010, after which he was traded to Hawthorn for a third round draft pick. He played his last Melbourne game in an exhibition match against the Brisbane Lions, after being traded.
Hawthorn (2011–2014)
In Cheney"s first at season at Hawthorn, he played in eight games and kicked his first goal in the American Federation of Labor-Congress against Essendon.
In 2014, Cheney played the opening nine games of the season as a key defender for the injury-hit Hawks, before failing to break into the side for the rest of the season. At the end of the season, he was traded to Adelaide in the last few minutes of the trading period.
