Hartigan was selected with the Crows" first pick, #14, in the 2012 Rookie Draft. Whilst Hartigan was overlooked on the original draft as an 18-year-old, he was noticed by Crows recruiters after strong performances at VFL side Werribee in 2012. Hartigan made his American Federation of Labor-Congress debut in round 18, 2013, and played three matches as a key defender, looking comfortable at American Federation of Labor-Congress level
This along with a string of strong performances for SANFL club South Adelaide saw him promoted to the Crows senior list for 2014.
Hartigan played seven consecutive matches early in the 2014 season before being squeezed out of the side, and was pushing for a recall when he suffered a spleen injury that ended his season.
