Kyle MacLachlan Edit Profile

Actor

Kyle MacLachlan was an American actor, whose career has been spread across television, movies, theatre, and even videos games. He is best recognized for his work on the TV series Twin Peaks and Desperate Housewives.

Background

Ethnicity: Kyle has Scottish, English, Cornish, and German ancestry.

Kyle MacLachlan was born and raised in Yakima, Washington, to Catherine Louise (Stone), a public relations director, and Kent Alan McLachlan, a lawyer, and a stockbroker.

Education

Kyle studied at Eisenhower High School in Yakima. While in high school, he performed in plays and musicals, taking part in his first play at age 15.

Then he graduated from the University of Washington in 1982 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Career

Kyle made his feature film debut when he starred in the big-budget David Lynch adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune (1984), but only enjoyed real success after appearing in a second Lynch project, the moody and perverse classic, Blue Velvet (1986).

He starred in the 1987 Science Fiction Action film The Hidden playing FBI agent Lloyd Gallagher. This turned out to be a sign of things to come, as MacLachlan soon took on another oddball G-man, "Special Agent Dale Cooper", on Lynch's cryptic ABC-TV series, Twin Peaks (1990), perhaps, along with Blue Velvet (1986), his most famous role. MacLachlan's brilliant work as Agent Cooper earned him a Golden Globe award and a pair of Emmy nominations, as well as steady work in television and films, including a part as Ray Manzarek in the Oliver Stone film The Doors (1991), about the band of the same name. In the 1993 film version of Franz Kafka's The Trial, with a screenplay by Harold Pinter, MacLachlan played the lead role of the persecuted Josef K.

In 1994 he appeared as villain "Cliff Vandercave" in the live-action version of The Flintstones. His career took a hit after he appeared in the infamous flop, Showgirls (1995). The movie was not a successful one and collected a record seven Golden Raspberry Awards.

However, MacLachlan returned to prominence in the early 2000s with a re-occurring role on HBO's Sex and the City, (1998), as well as a starring role in the TV movie, The Spring (2000), and a turn as "Claudius" in director Michael Almereyda's version of Hamlet (2000). MacLachlan later took advantage of his resemblance to Cary Grant, when he played the classic actor's spirit in Touch of Pink (2004).

In 2006, after appearing in the short-lived In Justice, MacLachlan starred in Desperate Housewives as the mysterious dentist Orson Hodge. He first appeared during the show's second season and became a full-time cast member at the start of season three. In 2007, MacLachlan was one of the presenters at the London leg of Live Earth benefit concerts. He appeared in the 2008 film The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. In the English version of the cult 2006 Norwegian animated film Free Jimmy released in 2008, he voiced the character of "Marius", a militant animal rights activist.

In 2007, he was one of the presenters at the London leg of Live Earth. In 2015, MacLachlan voiced the main character’s father in the Pixar animated feature Inside Out. In January 2015, it was announced that MacLachlan would appear one more time in the role of Special Agent Dale Cooper in the new season of television series Twin Peaks.

In addition to his acting career, Kyle MacLachlan owns a vineyard and winery with business partner Eric Dunham. His winery is named ‘Pursued by Bear’ which is in reference to stage directions in Shakespeare’s The Winter Take, “Exit, pursued by bear” and was suggested to him one evening by Fred Savage. It is regarded as one of Washington's highest rated wine labels.
