Summers began his career as a fellow at Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in 1991. A year later he took the same position at Queen's University and at Cambridge University in 1993. Then in 1996, Kyle was appointed an assistant professor of biology at Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences of East Carolina University. In 2002, he became an associate professor of biology at the college. Nowadays he is a professor of biology at Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences.
