Kyodo Hamada was born in Osaka in a family named Nawa but was adopted into the Hamada family which traditionally engaged in medical practice.

He studied painting first under Gogaku Fukuwara and modelled his works after Chinese artists.
Career
It was said that patients thronged his home. Was a man of few words, fond of letters and skilled in painting pictures of the South School of China. His works were reputed for elegance.
