(Professor Markides continues his quest for the nature of ...)
Professor Markides continues his quest for the nature of reality, mind, self, and ultimate divinity, searching within diverse sources of wisdom on a journey that takes him from Maine to New York to London to Cyprus and on to ancient monasteries on the coast of Greece. His revelation of a vital, living mystical practice, based in ancient Christian thought, is a major step in linking the most esoteric traditions of the East to the largely hidden esoteric traditions of the West.

(Ever since his childhood, Kyriacos C. Markides has heard ...)
Ever since his childhood, Kyriacos C. Markides has heard mysterious rumors concerning the Magus of Strovolos, Cyprus’s “specialist of the netherworld.” When he returns to Cyprus as an adult, Markides seeks out this master healer and spiritual teacher, to discover the old man for himself. Armed with the skepticism he learned as a sociologist, combined with his passion to explore the inner world and beliefs of this strange Magus, Markides soon learns to appreciate the power and wisdom of this peaceful and humorous soul. From his exorcism of a Jewish girl haunted by Nazi ghosts to his theory of reincarnation, the Magus reveals to Markides the extraordinary secrets of his philosophy, challenging Western materialism and science, and pointing towards vast domains we normally cannot see. In writing The Magus of Strovolos, Markides seeks to bring the master healer’s teachings to the world. By reading it, we too undertake his spiritual journey.

Maximos is, apparently, Markides" pseudonym for a Cypriot bishop, namely Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol) Markides has also given lectures and workshops around the United States, Canada and other countries as well as appearing on United States television and being interviewed by radio stations, newspapers and magazines. There is a fairly wide-ranging interview in two parts with Kevin Allen of Ancient Faith Radio available online as an audio download or transcript. In his earlier books Markides seems content to see any psychic phenomenon as of interest and value in itself and is also quick to draw (apparent) parallels between different religions or to gesture towards "the perennial philosophy".
However, he has gradually moved away from these assumptions.
Speaking to Kevin Allen he avers: ".. it was a revelation to me that there might be something over and beyond the physical material universe. So, that was the starting point.
Then, of course, I realized that there are grey areas and there are problematic kinds of phenomena are good, necessarily." lieutenant is not clear where Markides stands on some of these issues now.
