Kyuichi Takeuchi was born in 1857 in Tokyo, Japan. He was born in a family of artists in Edo (now Tokyo, Japan).
He studied sculpturing under Ryusen Horiuchi and did extensive research in the national treasure and the Buddhist statues at the Shosoin at Nara.
He won the second prize with his wooden image of Emperor Jimmu (1890), which was displayed at the 3rd Industrial Exhibition. Was appointed a professor of sculpture at Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts. One of his exhibits won high praise from critics at the Chicago Exhibition (1893), and he was subsequently appointed artist to the Imperial Court. Is regarded as one of the three masters in wood carvings, the others being Komyo Ishikawa and Koun Takarnura.
