(The Western world's fascination with the Muslim world dat...)
The Western world's fascination with the Muslim world dates back to the early 19th century. Islamic society had enormous appeal to men's romantic imaginations and male fantasies. Even today, the majority of western Islamic scholars, mostly men, travel to the countries of their specialty, meet with political leaders, clerics, and their western-educated counterparts in Middle Eastern universities. But they are missing something. Behind the courtesy extended to their male visitors, there lies a whole hidden interior world--the life of women and family--that can tell us more about the psyche of the country of choice than the polite manners of the men's world can reveal.

(Laina Farhat-Holzman, a former professor of World History...)
Laina Farhat-Holzman, a former professor of World History and Islamic Civilization, was married for many years to an Iranian whose mother became very close to her. During a long visit, the two women began to share fairy-and folk-tales with each other for fun. Farhat-Holzman translated the Iranian tales and packed them away until recently. These stories, told to her aristocratic mother-in-law by an illiterate nanny and servants, reveal much about the nature of every day Persian life, values and daydreams. They range from dreamy to the funny and often wicked. They are definitely not for young children. They reveal the nature of a people who know how to get around tyranny.
