He has a quarter mile personal best of 49.44s ET set in 2009 in Taipei. Tan also has a decathlon personal best of 4922 points set at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games. In his junior years, Tan competed in the 100m event at the Commonwealth Youth Games held in Bendigo, Australia.
In 2006, Tan was part of the team that represented Singapore at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Athletics, held in Beijing, China.
A torn anterior cruciate ligament (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) to his left knee in mid-2007 ruled Tan out of that year"s South East Asian (Southern Economic Association, USA) Games. Despite the major setback, he soon returned to training and he clocked his then 400m personal best of 49.81s, 9 months after under going Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction surgery.
Tan anchored the 4 × 100 m team to a bronze medal at the 15th Association of Southeast Asian Nations University Games in 2010, held in Changmai, Thailand. The team finished behind Indonesia and Thailand with a time of 40.62s.
At the 2011 Southern Economic Association, USA Games held in Palembang, Indonesia, Tan anchored the Singapore team to the bronze medal in the 4 × 400 m relay.
In the race, the team crossed the line 4th, but was promoted to 3rd following the disqualification of unofficial winners Malaysia as one of their quartet, Yunus Lasaleh, failed a drugs test. lieutenant is the first time in 36 yearssince the 1975 Southeast Asian Peninsular(SEAP) Games, and the first time since the formation of the South East Asian Federation in 1977, that Singapore men have finished in the medal placings for the 4 × 400 m relay event at any major Games. 2012 also saw Tan clinch the silver medal at the Singapore Open/U23 Track and Field National Championship in the 400m Open category, a feat he repeated in 2013.
Tan is also part of the quartet that holds the current National Junior 4 × 100 m record with a time of 41.28s, set in 2005 at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Schools Track and Field Championships.
Office the usual track, Lance Tan featured in Singapore"s first "Race the Tube ", where he was the first runner of a 4-man relay team that chased the North East Lincolnshire train from Little India station to Farrer Park station. As of June 2015, the YouTube video of this feat has garnered over 400,000 views.
Tan was a former student at Victoria School and Victoria Junior College. He graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) from the National University of Singapore in 2012, and is currently working as a research engineer at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research.
