Spina was born and raised in Reno, Nevada, and graduated from Wooster High School. Freestyle Skiing World Cup

He finished second (Silver) in 1988 and third (Bronze) in 1992.
He also won the Freestyle World Championships in 1991 in Lake Placid, New New York Following his ski career, he went on to achieve academic degrees in both Mechanical Engineering and Masters of Business Administration (Master of Business Administration), from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Spina participated, and was on the winner stand in the Olympic Freestyle Ski events at both the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics that were held in Calgary, Canada and Albertville, France, respectively.
