1913 began lit work; 1915-1916 formed group of young poets including V. Rozhdestvenskiy, V. Zlobina and L. Nikulina and published journal “Rudin”. Wrote under pen-names L. Khrapovitskiy, I. Smirnov, et cetera 1916-1917 worked for journal “Letopis”’ and Gorky's newspaper “Novaya zhizn’”.
1917 comissar. Naval General Staff. 1918-1919 served on Civil War front against Admiral Kolchak as intelligence agent behind the White lines. 1920 with Soviet dipl mission in Afghanistan.
1923 visited Germany. 1924 visited Ural and Donets Basin.
