Born in Toledo, Kaczala graduated from Toledo"s Central Catholic High School. In 1983 he graduated with honors from the University of Toledo College of Law.

Marcia C. "Marcy" Kaptur in Ohio"s 9th congressional district. Kaczala was elected to Toledo City Council in 1991, and he served in that position until he was appointed Lucas County auditor in 1993. Kaczala served as auditor for fourteen years until 2007.
While working as auditor, Kaczala also served as the president of the County Auditors’ Association of Ohio.
He also served as president of the Northwest Ohio County Auditors’ Association, which includes Sandusky, Ottawa and Erie counties. Kaczala considered running for a position as Ohio"s secretary of state in 2002.
However, he dropped out of the race when incumbent Ken Blackwell decided to seek re-election and run again as auditor in that year"s race. In 2007, Kaczala ran for political office again, this time for Toledo Municipal Court, but suffered the same result at the hands of the Republican party-endorsed Judge Michael R. Goulding.
Kaczala also taught courses in real estate law, civil rights, and ethics at the University of Toledo.
On Tuesday, June 8, 2010, Kaczala apparently committed suicide, leaping from the fifth floor of the parking garage at the Toledo Hospital.
