It's surprising to many people that the immune system plays a big role in depression. In our recent paper, we reviewed this, and discussed immune-related genes identified in a genome-wide meta-analysis of depression. These are new potential targets for treatment.

Baum was born on February 8, 1965 in Los Angeles, California, United States; the son of Eric and Lois Baum.
Baum received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University in 1987. Seven years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of California, San Diego.
Baum began his career as a fellow at the University of California, La Jolla in 1994. Two years later he took the same position at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Then in 1997, Larry became a science officer at the same university. He served as an assistant professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong from 2002 to 2008. In 2008, Baum was appointed an associate professor at that university, where he worked until 2014. Nowadays he is a research officer at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Hong Kong.
