Larry Jordan Rowe is an American lawyer based in Boston, Massachusetts, who spent much of his career as a partner at the law firm Ropes & Gray LLP. Admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1985 after studies at Harvard Law School, he advised institutional investors and fund sponsors on private equity and other alternative assets.
Background
Rowe's professional life was centered in Boston, the capital of Massachusetts, where his legal career developed within the city's established commercial law sector.
Boston had been a major center of American commerce and finance for generations, and its long-established law firms served corporations, banks and investment institutions. Ropes & Gray, one of these firms, was founded in Boston in 1865, when its founders began their practice in the period after the Civil War.
Education
Rowe received a Bachelor of Arts summa cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1980. Dartmouth, founded in 1769 in Hanover, New Hampshire, is one of the nine colonial colleges and a member of the Ivy League.
He then pursued graduate study at Harvard, earning a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School and a Master of Public Policy from Harvard University, both in 1984. Harvard Law School, established in 1817 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is the oldest law school in continuous operation in the United States. In the 1870s, Dean Christopher Columbus Langdell introduced its standard first-year curriculum and the case method of teaching, which became a model for many American law schools.
Rowe was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1985, completing the transition from legal education to practice in the state.
Career
Rowe's principal professional affiliation was with Ropes & Gray LLP, a Boston law firm founded in 1865 by John Codman Ropes and John Chipman Gray, both Harvard Law School graduates. During the Great Depression the firm developed a bankruptcy practice, and the New Deal brought it a growing labor practice. The firm later expanded to offices across the United States, Europe and Asia.
He later served as a partner in the firm's asset management group, where he advised institutional and other investors on alternative assets, including private fund investments, equity and debt investments, separately managed accounts and natural resources investments. He also represented fund sponsors in forming and maintaining private investment funds, including buyout, venture, hedge, debt and special-focus funds.
He served as co-chair of the firm's private equity group, its investment funds group and its venture capital group. Selected clients named on his firm profile include Brown University, Dartmouth College, Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Harvard University and Summit Rock Advisors. The firm's biography identifies him as a retired partner.
Rowe also wrote an overview of United States private equity markets and their regulation for Thomson Reuters Westlaw.
