Latrobe Carroll was born on January 5, 1894, in Washington, District of Columbia, United States.
Latrobe graduated from Harvard University in 1918.
Carroll began his career as a member of the editorial staff at the Century Company, New York City, in 1919, and was a staff writer for the Foreign Press Service, New York, in 1920. He moved to Liberty Magazine in 1924 as a member of the editorial staff, a position he retained until he left in 1934 to pursue his career as a free-lance writer. His first book, co-written with his wife, Ruth Carroll, was Luck of the Roll and Go (1935). Altogether the couple wrote at least twenty books, all targeted for the juvenile market, including their last book, Hullabaloo, the Elephant Dog (1975).
