Taught school, did mechanic work in New York, 1833. After college took over father’s farm, Fairfield. Became greatly interested in dairying, spent rest of life in discovery of new and better methods.
Built model cheese factory and dairy laboratory on his farm, 1867 (results brought improvements in manufacturing cheese, adopted by Canada, United States and Scotland).
Formed Little Fall Farmer’s Club. Because of bad health moved to smaller farm near Rochester, New York, 1874.
Expert judge in dairy section Centennial Exposition, Philadelphia, 1876. Delegate from United States to conference in London by invitation of British Dairymen’s Association, 1885.
