Baum received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alabama in 1960. Two years later he earned his Master of Science degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Cell Physiology in 1965 from the same university.
Baum began his career as an assistant professor of biology and a head of the Biology Department at the University of Alabama in 1965. A year later he took a position of an assistant professor of Biology Department at Northeast Louisiana University. In 1969, Lawrence was appointed an associate professor of biology at the same university and held it for twenty eight years. Also шт 1981 he became a director of NLU (Northeast Louisiana University) Cancer Research Center, where he worked until 1997.
Baum was a chairperson of the American Lung Association of Louisiana and the Louisiana representative to the National Council of the American Lung Association. He was a member of the Louisiana Cancer and Lung Trust Fund Board of Directors from 1992 to 1997.
Larry was also a president of the Town and County Homeowners Association. He served many years on the Board of Directors of the Monroe Area Guidance Center. He was a member of American Physiological Society and Sigma Xi.
Baum was married to Dorothy Moore Baum. Then he married Dee Baum. They have three children and seven grandchildren. Baum liked to attend the grandchildren's recitals, competitions, games and helped with school projects.
