In 1965 Lawrence J. Cunningham received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from the University of Cincinnati and a Master of Education degree in 1967. In 1987 he obtained a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Oregon.
From 1967 to 1968 Lawrence J. Cunningham was a mathematics teacher at a junior high school in Covington, Kentucky. From 1968 to 1993 he was a teacher of science and social studies at schools in Guam and a coach of Guam’s Mock Trial Team from 1984 to 1998.
From 1994 to 2007 he was a research associate at the University of Guam Richard F. Taitano Micronesian Area Research Center (MARC), an assistant professor of history at the University of Guam until 2008 and faculty advisor for the Traditional Seafaring Society until 2007.
Since 2007, Cunningham serves as the historian for TASI (Traditions About Seafaring Islands), a non-profit corporation, dedicated to reviving traditional Micronesian seafaring, proa building, and non-instrument navigation in Guam.
He is the author of Ancient Chamorro Society (1992); and co-author of A History of Guam (2001); Guam: A Natural History (2001); and Micronesian Texts for the K-12 Reader: A Selection Guide (2002). Cunningham has traveled throughout the United States, Micronesia, Japan, Southeast Asia, India, Nepal, and Africa.
Lawrence J. Cunningham is a member of the American Federation of Teachers, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Guam Federation of Teachers, Guam Library Association, University of Guam Seafarers, Ancient Order of the Chamorri, Phi Delta Kappa.
On June 13, 1964, Lawrence J. Cunningham married Cheryl Faith Napier. They have a daughter, Kim Thai.
