(Veteran missionaries Larry and Lilian Driskill describe t...)
Veteran missionaries Larry and Lilian Driskill describe the many lessons and insights they learned as they adjusted to living in post-World War II Japan. Like the facets of a diamond the vignettes they write about throw light, not only on life in Japan, but on what is involved in adjusting to any culture, because although cultures differ in various parts of the world, the problems of adapting cross-culturally are similar.

This bright collection of stories from around the world are wonderful ways for young readers to hear about mission works around the world. Suggested uses for these stories include: -- As illustrations for sermons and talks. -- As stories to read to children (older ones can read them without help). -- Adapted into dramas for church school groups or at camps and conferences. -- As mission studies for any group. -- As examples of where our mission money goes (encouraging mission giving and other Christian stewardship). Originally from Virginia, the author Dr. Driskill and his family served as missionaries for over 20 years in Japan. During that time he was the organizing pastor for three new churches in Japan and helped in developing six others as well as two Christian schools. Since leaving Japan, Dr. Driskill has served several Presbyterian churches, including Japanese-American churches in the Los Angeles area, preaching in both English and Japanese. He moved to Westminster Gardens, a missionary retirement home in California after a long career in ministry in the U.S. and Japan.

(As the number of cross-cultural and interracial marriages...)
As the number of cross-cultural and interracial marriages in our society grows, our faith communities find they are welcoming into their midst an increasing number of those who are marrying across the traditional barriers of race, language and ethnicity. Such couples inevitably face unique hurdles as they try to forge family systems that function even though they come from disparate backgrounds, and in many cases, have dissimilar expectations of what marriage and family should be. Lawrence Driskill has done a masterful job interviewing and writing up the case histories of 20 cross-cultural couples with church connections. He candidly observes where the largest obstacles have been found and then points out what the church can do to help these families resolve conflicts and establish happy homes. The success stories included highlights of what has worked (concretely) for the various ones whose stories are told here. Specific guidelines are spelled out for those who would minister to the cross-cultural marriages in their own church. -- Midwest Book Review.
