He was born in 1381 in Venice, Italy. Giustiniani was a member of the well-known Giustiniani family, which includes several saints.
In 1404, after he had been ordained a deacon, at the suggestion of an uncle who was a priest, he joined a community of secular canons following a monastic form of life on the island of San Giorgio in Alga. He was elected general and regarded as founder of a congregation of secular canons in succession to the Canons Regular at Alga near Venice. Bishop of Castello from 1433 onward, he was named Patriarch of Venice in 1451, when Pope Nicholas V transferred the patriarchate to Venice from Grado. He thus became the first Patriarch of Venice. During his life he composed many books for ascetical reading and was noted for his love of the poor. He was canonized in 1690; his feast day is September 5.
