He was nominated to the bench by George H. West. Bush on January 24, 1990. Judge McKenna received his commission on April 30 of the same year, taking the seat of William C. Conner. Judge McKenna assumed senior status on May 24, 2002.
After graduating from Regis High School in 1951, Judge McKenna received his Bachelor of Arts from Fordham College in 1956 and his Bachelor of Laws from Columbia Law School in 1959.
Prior to his appointment, Judge McKenna was in private practice in New York City. First he worked at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett from 1959–1969, and then at Wormser, Kiely, Alessandroni, Hyde & McCann from 1969-1990.
He is a member of the New York State Bar Association.
