In this revised and enlarged edition, Leander E. Keck presents a succinct, comprehensive, and up-to-date scholarly interpretation of Paul's theology. Keck has revised the volume to account more fully for Paul's understanding of the law and of faith/trust. He has retained the basic structure of the first edition but now apprises the reader of specific details of his own continuing thinking in light of select scholarly discussions. Entirely new to the volume is an appendix, Paul's Theology in Historical Criticism, a summary of the scholarly effort to account for, understand, and interpret Paul's theology.

The New Testament book "Acts of the Apostles" is a book of Bible study that becomes a stimulus to action. Author Leander E. Keck, writing in 1964, believed that the 20th Century was like none other since the first, in that there is in modern times no Christendom, no Christian culture in which the population in general automatically accepts any Christian presuppositions. In such a situation the Christian is called to witness aggressively in word and deed to the nature and power of his or her faith. This summons has strong implications in such areas as the confrontation of other faiths, the attitude of the Christian toward his government, the charting of a course in times of racial crisis; in fact, in every aspect of contemporary life.

Keck shows how the church is suffering from malaise brought on by oversecularization in aspects of church life including worship, theology, ethos, and communication. This penetrating clarion call to renewal cuts through the conventional ideological labels of "liberal" and "conservative." Keck argues with passion that mainline churches today must neither pretend to be culturally triumphant nor whimper in fear. Rather, the church has grounds to be confident about its proper nature and mission. Keck envisions a renewed church that has recovered a sense of what is basic to its nature and purpose--restoring the praise of God to the center of worship.

(In this guide to reading the Bible, Dr. Keck opens the do...)
In this guide to reading the Bible, Dr. Keck opens the door to vital faith without shutting the door to critical thought. He believes that understanding the Bible need not be a formidable task if the average reader will approach it as an active dialogue between himself and each of the Bible writers. Theology, anthropology, archaeology, and history are presented as basic tools for fuller understanding, and the Bible is discussed as an exciting intellectual undertaking for modern minds. Dr. Keck does not attempt to summarize the Bible or its thought: instead he invites the reader to discover the issues for himself and deal with them when they arise. after introducing readers to this creative dialogue method of interpretation, TAKING THE BIBLE SERIOUSLY suggests ways of applying biblical truths to science and ethics--both areas of vital concern in today's living.
