In 1922 Lee began work as a model in New York for Edward Steichen. From 1929 to 1932 she worked as an assistant and model for Man Ray in Paris, France.
In 1930 Lee opened her own studio in Paris, France, occasionally teaching photography as well. In two years she opened a New York studio. Also an actress, Miller played the lead role in Jean Cocteau's film Le Sang d'un Poète in Paris, France, in 1930.
From 1939 to 1945 Lee joined the London War Correspondents Corps publishing her descriptions and photographs from the front in Vogue.
