Leigh Perkins was born on November 27, 1927.
Perkins purchased The Orvis Company in 1965, which became one of the largest and most respected outdoor stores in the nation. After his retirement in 1992, Leigh turned the business over to his sons.
Leigh has also served on the Boards of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and The Cleveland Scholarship Foundation; and continues to serve on the Board of The American Museum of Fly Fishing, which he founded.
Leigh H. Perkins’s collaboration with Geoffrey Norman resulted in A Sportsman’s Life: How I Built Orvis by Mixing Business and Sport, based on Perkins’s own personal and professional experience. It was published in 1999, followed by Rising Fish and Pointing Dogs.
Leigh H. Perkins has been listed as a noteworthy company executive and conservationist by Marquis Who's Who. He is a successful author whose books have received critical acclaim from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Leigh is also a recipient of the Oakleaf Award and Sportsman of the Year Award.

1999Leigh H. Perkins has been a member of the board of trustees of The Nature Conservancy, The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy and past President of the Ruffed Grouse Society.
Leigh Perkins was married twice. His second wife was Romi Perkins, an author. Leigh has four children - Leigh, David, Molly and Melissa.
