After his arrival in Ohio he began work as a builder-architect. In 1826 he took a contract to plan and erect the first unit of the Western Reserve College at Hudson, and three years later designed the College Chapel. After his death, Simeon Porter, a son of the Colonel, took over the completion of the Chapel. The elder Porter is also credited as architect and superintendent of work on the Congregational Church in Tallmage, Ohio, built between 1822 and 1825.
