Len was born as Leonard Colodny on January 21, 1938, in Washington, United States, to Samuel and Ethel Colodny.
Colodny studied at the McKinley Technical High School. Also, he attended Montgomery College from 1957 to 1959.
As a private investigator and businessperson, Colodny was a Colodny’s Inc. (a liquor brokerage) vice president, from 1960 till 1973, and its president, from 1973 to 1975. He was also a president of Colodny’s of Maryland, Inc., for six years from 1973.
Colodny worked as a consultant for the television documentary John Ehrlichman—In the Eye of the Storm, at the American International Television, from 1996.
After seven years of work, Len Colodny and newspaper reporter Robert Gettlin wrote the 1991 book Silent Coup: The Removal of a President. The book, based on interviews with participants in the Watergate scandal, newly declassified documents, and other sources, garnered much media attention and enjoyed a run on the bestseller lists. According to Colodny and Gettlin, certain aides maneuvering in the White House precipitated the resignation of the American President Richard Nixon. This theory bucks the previously accepted version of events offered by Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. Due to the dispute, Silent Coup has received wildly divergent reviews.
Colodny and Gettlin maintain that John Dean was the man responsible for the 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate Building. The authors also maintain that Alexander Haig and John Dean, working independently and with their own agendas, orchestrated the events that ousted Nixon. They also suggest that Haig was “Deep Throat,” the anonymous source of information that Woodward and Bernstein used to write their Watergate articles in the Washington Post. The two authors maintain that Nixon was guilty of trying to cover up the break-ins, but note that he was also a victim of Dean and Haig’s maneuvering.
In 1992 John Dean began legal action against Len Colodny and Gordon Liddy. Dean objected to information that appeared in books by Liddy and Colodny. That case was settled in 1999 when State Farm Insurance Company paid Colodny $410,000.00 to allow Dean to dismiss the case without going to summary judgement. Dean also had to agree not to sue Colodny again and that was in the Court Order.
Colodny has written extensively about Watergate. Articles by him include Felt Was Asked Under Oath in 1975 If He Was Deep Throat (9th June, 2005) and Still Protecting Al Haig (7th July, 2005).
He has had a long and unique history with The Washington Post, and its longtime investigative reporter and editor, Bob Woodward.
