Addressed in this book is the increased need for sophisticated hospital management information in the wake of cost-containment pressures resulting from the prospective payment system and DRGs. It shows how the integration of clinical with financial data, or case mix information, can help maintain quality of care while minimizing costs, and in addition, the book examines information systems containing detailed case mix information on individual patients and provides technical information on the state of the art of case mix management: designing a system from scratch, enhancing existing systems, planning future enhancements, evaluating purchase of a system. Defined are key terms and a description of specific applications, and an examination of the selection and quality of data to include in the system. A variety of case mix classification schemes are also reviewed.
