He graduated Bachelor of Philosophy from Cornell University in 1889. He studied law at Syracuse University and was admitted to the bar in 1891.
He commenced practice in Kingston, but soon removed to Syracuse, New New York On May 13. 1913, he was appointed by Governor William Sulzer a justice of the New York Supreme Court (5th District) to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Peter B. In 1928, he ran on the Democratic ticket for the New York Court of Appeals, but was defeated by Republican Irving G. Hubbs.
