Francis was born on November 1, 1977 in Chennai, India; the son of Vasantha Daniel Francis and Francis Balraj Francis.
Francis received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Loyola College in 1998. Two years later he earned his Master of Science degree in Chemistry from the same college. In 2005, Leonard was given a Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research.
Francis began his career as a research fellow at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research in 2005. A year later he became a postdoctoral fellow at Weizmann Institute of Science, where he worked until 2008.
In 2009, Leonard took the same position at International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory. Also he was a fellow at that laboratory from 2011 to 2013. In 2013, Francis held a position of a staff researcher at International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory. Since 2016 he has been a research group leader in the Department of Advanced Electron Microscopy, Imaging and Spectroscopy at International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory.
Leonard has published more than 100 papers and 8 review articles in major international journals. In addition, he has three book chapters. Two of his articles have made it to the cover page of journals. He served as the guest editor for a special issue of the Journal of Nano Materials: Nanomaterial Properties: Size and Shape Dependencies. He has participated in two major European projects: NANOHVAC and NANoReg and three regional projects.
Francis was selected as Outstanding Scientist Worldwide for 2007 by the International Biographical Centre of Cambridge. Also he was selected as Marquis Who's Who of Emerging Leaders, 2007 Edition and Marquis Who's Who in Asia, 2007 Edition. He received the fellowship from Feinberg Graduate School of Weizmann Institute of Science from 2006 to 2008.
