Marte graduated from the University of Amsterdam with a Certificate in Journalism in 1963. He also graduated from Netherlands Film Institute with a Certificate in Film Sciences in 1967, from the Koninklijk Technicum PBNA with a Certificate in Public Relations in 1970, from the Netherlands University Foundation for International Cooperation with a Certificate in Development Studies in 1970.
Marte also attended Katholieke Sociale Academie in Amsterdam in 1971. He graduated from George Washington University with a Master of Arts degree in 1982 and earned his doctorate from Vrije University in 1994.
Marte started his career as a reporter and news reader at Radio Apinti in his hometown Paramaribo, Suriname in 1958. Two years later, he went to Radio Avros, where he became an assistant director of news department in 1960. He worked there for two years, when he was sent to Amsterdam, Netherlands, to work as a reporter and editor for Latin American, African, and Caribbean affairs. He worked there till 1968.
Marte then returned to his hometown and worked there as a deputy director of public relations department of the Suralco Company till 1975, until he was appointed to the position of chief of public relations and information department for the Ministry of Labor and Housing of Suriname. He held that position for four years, and then decided to continue his career of a journalist. In 1979 he became an international affairs correspondent for Radio Carina, Aruba, Netherlands Antilles. However, three years later, he left that position and started working as a bureau chief for Southern Africa at TriCon Press, Lilongwe, Malawi.
Since 1994, Marte works as an international politics commentator for Radio ABC in Paramaribo and as a visiting lecturer at the University of Suriname.
