Joined army, 1896; Lieutenant Indian Staff Corps. Served on North-west Frontier of India with 45th Rattray’s Sikhs. At defence of Chakdarra Fort (despatches, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order).
And with Malakand Field Force (medal and 2 clasps). Mahsud Waziri Blockade, 1901-1902 (despatches, clasp). Decorated by Queen Victoria in recognition of services during the defence of Chakdarra Fort. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1898; Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
