Began acting as an amateur in productions of the Fine Arts Social at Odessa Municipal Auditorium. 1896-1901 acted at Solovtsov Theater in Kiev and Odessa. From 1903 actor, Moscow Arts Theater.
1918 made first film appearance. From 1935 instructor and dean, Acting Faculty, 1939-1941 artistic director, State Institute of Stagecraft. Wrote numerous articles on acting theory.
