Leonid Muchnyk was born on December 17, 1896 in Odessa, Ukraine.
Leonid Muchnyk studied at Grekov Odessa Art school from 1911 to 1914 under the guidance of K. Kostandi and G. Ladyzhenskyy.
In 1919, Muchnyk entered the ranks of the Red Army and participated in battles.
Leonid Muchnyk worked at the Odessa Art Institute (now Grekov Odessa Art school) from 1930.
In 1934, his painting "Supply of Provision to the Battleship Potemkin" was shown at the 6th All-Ukrainian Exhibition in Kiev.
In 1935 he became a professor. Among his pupils were O.
Otsmanchuk, V. Vlasov, K. Lomikin, A. Soroka, S. Ryabchenko, K. Filatov.
In the postwar years, he continued to work fruitfully, focusing most of all on marine theme ("Cliff Virgo", "Fishing Harbor of Illichivsk".
From 1949 to 1957, Muchnyk also worked on a monumental canvas "The Rebellious Potemkinites Take the Body of the Murdered Vakulenchuk Ashore".
Besides, his personal exhibition took place in Odessa in 1963.
Leonid Muchnyk died on January 8, 1966 in Odessa, Ukraine.
