Background

Sobinov, Leonid was born on June 7, 1872 in Iaroslavl’. Son of an estate manager.

Education

Graduated in law from Moscow University, 1894. Studied simultaneously at the musical-dramatic college of the Moscow Philharmonic Society, 1892-1897.

Career

While a student, sang in the university choir and choir of Ukraine company which performed in Moscow. 1895-1899 assistant public notary. While studying at Musical Drama College, sang with Italian Opera Company.

From 1897 soloist, Opera Company, Bolshoy Theater. 1905-1911 performed at Scala and other West European opera theaters. 1917-1918 director, Bolshoy Theater.

1918 — 19 artistic director, Kiev Opera Theater. In his latter years director and artistic director, Stanislavsky Opera Theater. Roles: Bayan in Glinka’s Ruslan i Lyudmila (Ruslan and Ludmilla).

Vladimir Igor’yevich in Borodin’s Knyaz’ Igor’ (Prince Igor). Berendcy and Levko in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Snegurochka (The Snow-Maiden) and Mayskaya noch ’ (May Night). Lohengrin in Wagner’s “Lohengrin”.

Romeo in Gounod’s “Romeo and Juliet”, etc.
