Senior doctor with a hydrographical expedition to the North Pole on the Taimyr and Vaigach ice-breakers, 1910-1915. From 1932-1934, Narkomvod with the North Polar Expedition. An island in the region of the Severnaia Zemlia archipelago, discovered in 1913, now bears his name.
