Leonid Rzhevskiy was born on August 8, 1905 in Moscow, Russian Federation into a noble family. His father was an officer-cavalryman.
In 1930 Leonid Denisovich graduated from the literary and linguistic department of the pedagogical faculty of the Second Moscow State University.
Leonid Denisovich worked as a teacher in universities of Moscow, Orekhovo, Tula. From 1944 he lived in Germany and since 1950 was printed as a prose writer. In 1952-1955 he was a chief editor of the magazine "Grani". Then, he was a lecturer at a number of universities (Lund, Sweden, 1953-1961, with interruptions; Norman, Oklahoma, USA, 1963-1964; New York, 1964-1973; Vermont).
He is the author of many works written in various genres, including books about Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky, Boris Leonidovich Pasternak, Alexander Isaevich Solzhenitsyn. A collection of Rzhevskiy’s fiction "Between Two Stars" (2001) has been published in Moscow.
