Educated first privately in Livonia, then in Germany and England. Graduated in law from Oxford University, 1931.

Career

Colonel. . Left Russia with his family in September 1917. Returned to the former Russian Baltic provinces in 1918, then re-emigrated to Germany, 1919. Moved to England, 1923.

Called to the Bar, 1932. Sub-editor with the BBC World Service during World War II. Served in the British Army as a lt.-colonel. Retired. Awarded the MBE. In the 1980s, concentrated on literary translations.
