Leonid Petrovich Titov was a Belarusian physician, immunologist, microbiologist, virologist, and researcher. A professor and academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, he investigated medical microbiology, immune mechanisms, infectious diseases, and epidemiology, and received the State Prize of the Republic of Belarus in Science and Technology.
Background
Leonid Petrovich Titov was born on October 3, 1946, in Mikhailovichi in the Gorki District of Mogilev Region, Belarus. He graduated from Maslakovskaya Secondary School with a gold medal and completed his studies at the Pinsk Technological Technical School in 1965. From 1965 to 1968 he served in the army before entering medical education. His career developed in Belarusian medical science through clinical and experimental immunology, medical microbiology, virology, and epidemiology.
Education
Titov graduated from Maslakovskaya Secondary School with a gold medal and from the Pinsk Technological Technical School in 1965. He graduated with distinction from the Minsk State Medical Institute in 1975, receiving a Doctor of Medicine degree. He subsequently completed postgraduate training at the institute's Department of Microbiology and defended research on humoral factors of natural immunity in patients with primary chronic respiratory infections in 1978. His later scientific work led to a Doctor of Medical Sciences degree in 1991 for research on the physiological and pathological regularities of the complement system.
Career
Titov began his scientific and academic career at the Minsk State Medical Institute, where he worked successively as an assistant, associate professor, laboratory head, and head of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Virology. From 1988 to 1999 he headed that department. From 1995 to 1999 he served as director of the Research Institute for Epidemiology and Microbiology in Minsk. From 2009 he led the Laboratory of Clinical and Experimental Microbiology at the Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology, later also being identified as head of its Laboratory of Experimental Immunology. His research addressed the biology and molecular genetics of pathogenic and opportunistic microorganisms, cellular and molecular mechanisms of natural antitumor and anti-infective immunity, the effects of ionizing radiation on the immune system, and the development of methods and preparations for diagnosing and preventing infectious and immunopathological conditions. He published more than 700 scientific articles, prepared 20 methodological recommendations, obtained about 30 patents and inventor's certificates, and edited 35 collections of scientific papers. He supervised the training of 10 doctors of science and 39 candidates of science.
Achievements
Developed a major body of research in medical microbiology, immunology, virology, and epidemiology, including studies of complement-system function, natural antitumor and anti-infective immunity, pathogenic microorganisms, and immune responses to infectious disease.
Published more than 700 scientific articles, prepared 20 methodological recommendations, obtained approximately 30 patents and inventor's certificates, and edited 35 collections of scientific papers.
Supervised the training of 10 doctors of science and 39 candidates of science.
