Turkevich, Leonty was born on August 8, 1876 in Kremenetz, Volyn. Son of Jeronim and Anna (Ivanitskaya) Turkevich.

Career

Came to the United States, 1906, naturalized, 1928. Ordained to ministry Russian Orthodox Church, 1905. Consecrated bishop of Chicago, Mpl. and Mid West diocese, 1933, Chicago, Mpl., 1933-1945. Assistant school inspector, 1900. Teacher parochial school, Oboyan, Kursk, Russia, 1902-1905. Priest, teacher, Kremenetz, 1905-1906.

Rector Theological Seminary, Minneapolis, 1906-1912, Tenafly, New Jersey, 1912-1914. Cathedral dean, New York City, 1914-1933. Became archbishop of Chicago, 1945.
