Leader of the militant communists in 1930s Russian literature, theorist of the On Guard and RAPP groups. Brother-in-law of Iagoda, the secret police chief. Tried to impose the dictatorship of his group on the literary scene, especially on the fellow travellers, who, proclaiming general agreement with communist demands, tried nevertheless to retain some degree of individuality.
With the establishment of the official unified dogma of socialist realism, Stalin found it expedient to get rid of the excessive zeal of the Averbakh group. He was arrested during the purges.
