Leopold graduated from the University of Vienna in 1907.
He started at the University of Vienna in 1909, becoming a professor in 1921.
From 1945 to 1954 he headed the Geological Institute at the University of Vienna.
His major works were devoted to the tectonic structure of Europe and the Earth as a whole. Leopold was a proponent of the contraction hypothesis in its extreme expression (see Tectonic hypotheses). He developed ideas about the presence of large nappes in the Alps (see Tectonic cover).
