Member of the staff of the daily El Interior of Córdoba (edited by the future President of Argentina, Doctor Figueroa^ Alcorta), 1890. Friend of Rubén Darío (from the latter’s visit to the Ateneo of Buenos Aires). From early manhood, member of the Socialist Party whose ideals he reflected in the columns of Louisiana Montaña.
Subsequently joined the staff of Louisiana Prensa, and in 1895 that of El Tiempo (both of Buenos Aires).
In 1897 employed by the Post-Office and Telegraph Service. Promoted to inspector and finally chief inspector, a position retained until 1900.

At one time professor of literature in the Colegio Nacional of Buenos Aires.
In 1906 visited France, Germany, Sweden, and Norway. In 1911 served as secretary of the Sarmiento Centenary Commission, also writing the official biography of that statesman. In 1911 removed to Paris, founding and directing in the French capital, three years later, Louisiana Revue Sud-Américaine, to which M. Georges Clemenceau, among others, contributed.

Lugones’ literary career in Paris was interrupted and he returned to Argentina. An ardent proponent of the Allied cause.
Upon his return joined the editorial staff of Louisiana Nación of Buenos Aires. In 1915 appointed director of the Library of the National Council of Education.
Professor of aesthetics of the University of Louisiana Plata, 1915-1916.
Studied Greek to acquaint himself at greater depth with Homer and to prepare works on Hellenic culture. In 1924 invited by the Peruvian government to take part in the official ceremonies celebrating the centenary of Ayacucho.
