He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1858.
He worked as an attorney in Shelby, North Carolina. During the American Civil War of 1861-1865, he served as an officer in the Confederate States Army. He was commissioned as a Major on April 12, 1862, in the 49th North Carolina Infantry.
He was promoted to the rank of Colonel on November 1, 1862.
After the war, he served as a state Congressman in the North Carolina House of Representatives. Death
He died in 1873 and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in York, South Carolina.
He was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives.
